What are cookies?

Cookies are small strings of text that websites visited by a user send to their device, where they are stored and then retransmitted to the same sites the next time the same user visits that site. For this purpose, cookies are divided into technical and profiling cookies, depending on the function for which they are used, and into first-party and third-party cookies, depending on which party installs them.

Cookie types

Technical cookies
Technical cookies are used for the sole purpose of "transmitting data over an electronic communications network or - if strictly necessary for the provision of a service offered by the information company - for delivering a service that has been explicitly requested by the subscriber or user" (see Art. 122 paragraph 1 of the Data Protection Code). Technical cookies are different from browsing or session cookies (which guarantee normal browsing and use of the website), analytical cookies (similar to technical cookies where they are used directly by the site operator to collect information, in aggregate form, about the number of users and how they visit the same site) and functional cookies (which allow the user to navigate according to a set of criteria, such as language, in order to improve the service provided to that user).

Profiling cookies
Profiling cookies are used to send advertising messages in line with the preferences expressed by the user in the context of browsing the net.
